Serving the most disadvantaged with members of the group “A Living Hope”
On Saturday, April 5 in Brussels, the group A Living Hope served the most vulnerable through the association Opération Thermos. About fifteen members bought and prepared a full meal, which they then distributed to the many homeless people who had come to satisfy their hunger.
This year’s menu included couscous, seasonal vegetables and fruit, accompanied by a good hot soup.
The group has been participating in this event one evening a year for several years now. Despite their limited resources, they continue to invest both financially and actively in helping those in need. On Sabbath afternoon, most church members gather to prepare a full meal. At a set time, a bus chartered by the association picks up the team and the food containers, heading to a Brussels metro station where tables are set up and recipients wait to receive their food pack and bowl, along with a few additional treats. It’s a beautiful moment of connection with those present (homeless people, organization staff, sometimes police officers and church members or supporters). You can feel the joy of receiving on one side, and the joy of giving on the other. After the service and before cleaning up the association’s kitchen facilities, everyone gathers for a well-deserved shared meal.
A social and humanitarian event that the small community hopes to experience again and again, year after year, as it unites and energizes the participants—and because the needs of a vulnerable segment of society are growing ever more numerous and urgent.
